Keemo Palmer, 5, left, dribbles against Emaar Newman, 6, center, and Amani Osbourne, 6, as they and other children streamed into Camp Courant in Farmington for the first day of the 2018 season on Monday. The summer camp runs for the next six weeks for 650 campers from Hartford, completely free of charge. In its 124th year, Camp Courant operates entirely from donations from individuals, foundations, corporations, and fundraisers.

Before January, the city would pick up large items anytime they were left out. But the city’s shift to an appointment-only system and the addition of a new $75 charge for bulky waste pickup (after two free pickups) “has not solved the problem,” Mayor Luke Bronin said. He’s instructed crews to pick up bulky waste where they see it, regardless of whether it’s been scheduled for collection.
